What are YOUR memories of Oklahoma!?

I was in the 1995 ACT production of Oklahoma. Maybe my 3rd stage production ever. When at last they unfurled the show curtain, there it was spelled out in western block print: OKLAHOHA! I guess maybe an Oklahoma-Aloha? Great show, great people, directed by Glen Cannon and choreographed by the late, great Jim Hutchinson.

My husband and I have just moved back to the islands after 11 years in Britain. We were fortunate enough to live in the theatre city of Chichester so saw many top-notch productions. The Chichester Festival Theatre ‘s 2009 staging of Oklahoma was up for tough scrutiny: we Americans thinking “they never get the accents right” and my best friend, a classics fan who hates musicals, forced to accompany us as payment in kind for a season of Chekov we’d had to endure. The cast and crew did not disappoint. One of our favorite actresses from tv show Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Natalie Casey, delivered a sexually-charged performance as Ado-Annie that I can’t imagine getting past any community theatre. The leads embodied great American voices. We toe-tapped through all the perfectly executed dance numbers made all the better by the intimate space of theatre in the round. My friend admitted relunctantly she was converted as she kept singing the reprise after we left the theatre. See, Shakespeare ain’t always what it’s cracked up to be.

My first memory of Oklahoma! isn't from a specific production or movie. Oklahoma! brings back memories from my childhood, long before I would learn how to dance like a farmer or a cowman. My first Oklahoma! memory is hearing the song "Oh What a Beautiful Mornin" first thing in the morning as my sleepy eyes struggled to open. On the weekends my grandpa would make a big breakfast complete with pancakes (or hotcakes, as he called them). When breakfast was ready, he would wake up everyone in the house up by singing "Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day...wake up, wake up, breakfast is ready! Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day, I've got a beautiful feeling, everything's going my way!" Indeed, it was a beautiful morning.
